Artist Statement

"Me despierto de la luz de tus ojos."
I wake up to the light from your eyes.

To me, art and people are the light of life. I will paint a face or a person because there is a soul within that has inspired me to create a beautiful response. They say that eyes are the window to the soul and that is probably why I find an emotion in time captured best in the eyes and expression of a being. It is this moment that I capture best in painting so that it can be shared with others.

My experience living amongst the vibrant and narrative artists of New Mexico, Mexico and Chile has had a lasting impact on my painting style. I bring forth the brightest colors of my experiences and combine them with the circular compositions of light I see everywhere. The circle is a symbol that reoccurs frequently in our lives reminding us of the beginning and end of everything. A perfect completion.

I began painting murals while living in Montreal and New Mexico, partly because of my fascination with the great muralists from Mexico. Frustrated with the ephemeral nature of this medium I began painting on canvas a couple years ago and I have never looked back. I continue to be passionate and dedicated to my artistic journey.

About the Artist

Alison Yule grew up on the west coast of Canada. After completing her studio foundation year at the University of British Columbia, she moved to Montreal where she majored in Fine Arts at Concordia University.

She completed the final year of her Fine Arts Degree at the University of New Mexico which was the birth of her interest in the Mexican muralists, the work of Georgia O'Keefe and the artist Frida Kahlo.

Her journey south continued after graduation as did her fascination with Latin America. After teaching and travelling for half a year in Chile, she returned this past year to Mexico, where she finds her deepest inspiration for creation.

Alison currently resides in Vancouver, B.C., where she works as a professional artist.
